Ring in the New Year Telluride Style

Torchlight Parade to Telluride

What do grape eating, cannon blasting, bell chiming, champagne imbibing, foie gras dining and firework gazing have in common? They’re all part of New Year’s Eve celebrations around the globe, and Telluride has a bit of it all. Take a peek at the local New Year’s Eve lineup.

Whether you like to go big or small, there’s a little something for all types of merrymakers on New Year’s Eve.

The Quiet Side

Start the New Year modestly with fireworks and parades—torchlight parades that is. At 6:30 p.m. skiers and snowboarders from the Telluride Ski & Snowboard School and Telluride Ski Patrol make a nighttime descent into Telluride and Mountain Village riding and skiing with real live torches in hand. It’s a prime photo opportunity and a nice view from main street and Heritage Plaza. After the streaming light show, check out fireworks in Mountain Village. Ride the gondola back into town and grab a bite at La Cocina de Luz or 221 South Oak for quiet ambiance. Or check out Las Montanas for both dinner and music with the flamenco band, Nosotros. And don’t miss the San Miguel Courthouse clock tower celebration at midnight—it’s a longtime tradition and brings out nearly the whole town for New Year’s hugs, kisses and celebration. Check out our dining guide for more restaurant inside.

Kiddos

It’s not just for adults. This year a New Year’s Eve Children’s Torchlight Parade descends under Lift 1 on the Meadows Trail at 5:30 p.m. Kids interested in participating in the torchlight parade will meet at 5:00 p.m. in the Telluride Ski School Lobby. But unlike the adult torchlight parade, the kids will be carrying illuminated glow sticks to the bottom of Lift 1 for hot chocolate. Check out our kids guide for a list of things to do with the little ones.

Gala Seekers

Looking for a true New Year’s Eve party? Check out the Bubble Lounge featuring the Flagstaff Cosmic Country Rockers Gravy. Tickets are $25 in advance, $35 at the door. Don’t forget the Bubble Lounge offers healthy spirits too: oxygen at the oxygen bar.
In the Mountain Village, the Telluride Conference Center hosts the Indie Rock New Years Eve featuring Rooney and Mayday Parade. Tickets for this all-ages show are $60 available online at ticketweb.com and at the door. Doors open at 7 p.m.
The Sheridan Arts Foundation hosts a New Year’s Eve Gala with Flash Cadillac at 10:30 p.m. at the historic Sheridan Opera House. This fundraiser includes champagne, hors d’ oeuvres, and of course, dancing. General admission tickets are $100 and VIP reserved balcony tickets are $500.

Late Nighters

Historically, the Fly Me to the Moon Saloon is part of the reason people sleep in on the weekends, and New Year’s Eve is no different. For a late night show check out the Moon’s New Year’s Party with The Woodbox Gang. Tickets are $30 in advance.
Stroll on down to Tommy’s for the talented trio, The Voles, and on your way stop in at the Last Dollar Saloon for libations, music and reveler watching from the large main street windows, aka The Fishbowl. The New Sheridan Bar is also sure to please people watchers with comfortable antique couch window seating, and music seekers with a New Year’s Eve TBA act.

But don’t forget the biggest party of them all is on main street at the clock tower where everyone gathers to ring in the New Year in true holiday fashion—even if the clock is a few minutes off.

Happy New Year!

Telluride Mountainfilm Turns Thirty

Telluride MountainFilm at the Opera House

Telluride Mountainfilm began simply by a group of local climbers passionate about the outdoors and film. Now 30 years old, Telluride Mountainfilm remains true to its adventure roots but has grown globally with cultural, environmental and social film genres.

The Mountainfilm birthday bash hosted special guest filmmakers Charlie and Willie Ebersol, creators of "Ithuteng," a documentary film about South Africa. The film won Best Humanitarian Film Award at Mountainfilm 2005. The brother filmmaking team, along with filmmaker Kip Kroeger, will present a sneak peek of their current film "Don't Look Down," a documentary about Olympic snowboarder Shaun White

Santa and the Elves

Elfin' Good Time with Santa

Christmas is just hours away, and Mountain Village and Telluride are approaching it with a gusto. Santa himself is casting his attention on our mountain town.  You can catch him on the 24th at the Telluride Conference Center for free photos with Santa, or you can even spot him skiing on the mountain or at Gorrono's.

Of course, there are other activities in the village and in town.  You can watch the Torchlight Parade on the 24th at 6:30 p.m., or stop in for a warming drink at any of the restaurants in town. We recommend 9545 for their eggnog, or you can just make your own by watching our great video here.

But first, Plum TV got into the holiday spirit with a little contest for our hosts, Jeb Berrier and Ramona Bruland.  It's Jeb Berrier and Ramona Bruland vs.... Jeb Berrier and Ramona Bruland!  And you get to be the judge!

 Here's what you do:

1. Click on this link and watch the video (this will open a new window to the Elf Yourself site).  We also recommend playing around on this site, too.  It's a lot of fun.

2. Watch the video below.

3. Vote!

4. Check out our website for more of Plum TV's awesome features.

A Good Glass of Eggnog

Every holiday comes with traditions, and no December is complete without the good, old-fashioned taste of eggnog. Sure, you can go out and buy it at the store... but that's cheating.

Here on MNN, though, we've got you covered. Check it out as 9549's Executive Chef Kelly Patton shows Jeb Berrier how to make a very satisfying glass of eggnog... Christmas "cheer" optional.

Telluride Nordic Association 1K Sprint

Nordic Skiing Wilson Mesa

While some think skiing is only tied to lift-served terrain, others are pushing themselves across ski terrain by way of Nordic skis—and it's no easy feat. This weekend, classic Nordic and skate skiers sprint it out in the Telluride Nordic Association's 1K Sprint.

It's a battle of the fittest on the Wilson Loop (otherwise known as the Mountain Village Golf Course loop) and all are welcome to compete in this first of a series of races the Nordic association is hosting through winter. It's also the easiest to start the Nordic racing season with a sole kilometer. Races to come include a Priest Lake pursuit, the famous 12K Butch Cassidy Chase and a second Wilson Loop.

While they are races, these are fun races. All ages are welcome, kids too. Check out the Telluride Nordic Association's site for more info on the region's best Nordic trails and check out Telluride Nordic Center for rentals and local groomed trails.

MorningNoon&Night for the Holidays

This weekend on MorningNoon&Night our hosts Jeb Berrier and Ramona Bruland invite mountain folks and theater buffs to the show. A safari in the Swiss Alps? Why not. Alpenglow Ski Safari owner, ski instructor and mountain guide Ken Fuhrer talks about skiing the mountain safari. And Dr. Peter Harrelson talks about his work as a mountain medic.

On the theater side, both Bruland and Berrier have been super busy morning, noon and night. "Picasso at the Lapin Agile," a comedy written by Steve Martin and directed by Berrier, runs through the weekend and stars Bruland. Einstein, aka Buff Hooper, will be on MNN to talk science, and of course, about the play.

Jeep King of the Mountain Skier Cross

More than 100 skiers and snowboarders came to Telluride to compete in the Jeep King of the Mountain. Plum was right there getting the inside story, and we have it here for you.

Picasso at the Lapin Agile

Picasso & Suzanne

What do you have when you place two geniuses in one Parisian cafe? An odd couple, a brilliant set of ideas, and one of Steve Martin's best and most captivating comedies. Directed by Jeb Berrier and presented by Telluride Second Stage and the Sheridan Arts Foundation, “Picasso at the Lapin Agile” takes the historic Sheridan Opera House stage this week.

Both on the brink of greatness, Pablo Picasso and Albert Einstein find themselves at the Lapin Agile, or Nimble Rabbit, in Montmartre, Paris, in the early 1900s. Einstein will soon publish his special theory of relativity and Picasso will soon paint Les Demoiselles d'Avignon. At the Lapin Agile they debate the significance of genius while colorful characters wander in and out of this comedy written by Martin in 1993.

“Picasso at the Lapin Agile” stars Plum's Ramona Bruland and a slew of famous locals including Buff Hooper, Sasha Cucciniello, Ashley Boling, Tom Shane, Sean Greagor, Jeb Dobbins, Bubba Lee Schill, Jonny Flood, Teresa Koberstein and Jesse James Martin.

Tickets are available at the Opera House box office, Wizard Entertainment, or online at Telluride Ticket. Tickets are $15 and the show runs Dec. 19-23 at 8 pm nightly.

JKOM Snowboard Cross

The shortest distance between two points is a straight line, but the fastest is down the Jeep King of the Mountain raceway. Snowboarders went head to head in last week's JKOM finals, with Jacobellis and Palmer taking all. But as this video shows, sometimes it's not all about the destination.

It's about the race to get there.
