Bridal Veil Falls May Open to Ice Climbing

Bridal Veil Falls, perhaps the most difficult waterfall ice climb in the country, may open to ice climbing this winter, according to The Daily Planet. The falls were first climbed by legendary climber Jeff Lowe and Mike Weiss in 1974, but were closed in the '90s - although that hasn't stopped all climbers from picking their way up the icy falls illegally.

So what's the holdup to making this ice climber's dream a reality? In the next couple days, San Miguel County will close on its purchase of the Kentucky Placer, the strip of land that runs from Bear Creek to Bridal Veil Falls. Thus, the prospect of ice climbing hinges on the county making a deal with Idarado Mining Company, which owns the land around the falls. Idarado is investigating insurance options to protect itself if climbers were to injure themselves on Idarado's land.
