There was art to sit on, art to drink from, art to wear, to drive, to ride—and all of it was meant to gaze at. The Ah Haa Art Auction again put up for bid locally produced art to fund the community’s nonprofit art school, and it was done in pure retro fashion.
This year’s theme was Laugh-In, deemed after the wacky television comedy from the 60s and 70s—a fitting match for the eccentric guests and artists that filled Ah Haa’s new locale at the old depot building.
It is Ah Haa’s largest fundraising event of the year, and judging by the bidding war for General Norman Schwarzkopf’s piece, “The Two Secrets of 21st Century Leadership”, this year was a true fundraiser. Schwarzkopf’s piece sold for $19,000, one of the highest bids of the night. Judy Kohin's Valley Cow Scooter sold for $8,000.
The spirit of the late 60s was in the air, flower power was all around and disco dress abounded. Local works were up for the silent auction in the Ah Haa building, while outside under the big tent hosts Jeb Berrier and Paul Jones introduced the art acts.
Auctioneer Buster Cattles auctioned items in true fashion, all 17 items including a weekend trip to San Francisco ($1,700), the Valley Cow Scooter ($8,000), the 1978 Scout “Flower Power” car, “Hippie Dippy Hot Springs Tour" ($1,700), mahogany table, cherry wood and steel chairs, and a silk Twiggy-style dress by Sasha.
