The Fourth of July parade had everything from the standard to the strange — not just kids, dogs and pregnant women dressed in red, white and blue, but neomorph engineers displaying the workings of the eyeball, and a hula-hooping Statue of Liberty.
The Best of Parade prize went to the Eagles of Freedom, a group dressed with wings and flapping down main street. There were the usual quasi-political statements, like the electric car floats, the peace goddess and the cycling advocacy group. And General Stormin' Norman Schwarzkopf emceed the event, which got off the ground with the sonic boom of U.S. Airforce jets flying over the Telluride valley.
Town Park was teeming with visitors for the barbecue and the kids events later in the afternoon, and for the over-the-top fireworks display. This year the half-hour show cost about $30,000.
Tom Cruise, a part-time local in Telluride, was reportedly in town for the celebration. Cruise, who starred in the film "Born on the Fourth of July," was actually born on the third of July. Cruise's staff here called at least one rooftop owner in town to rent a perch for the fireworks show — but rooftop space on the Fourth is prime real estate in these parts, and the celeb was told that no, he could not rent the space, but that he was welcome to come join the party.
